Dear Friend,

Would you give me just a few minutes of your time today to tell you some important information that could add years to your life?

We all know the importance of eating healthy foods for their vitamin and mineral content, but in recent years, scientists have discovered that there are hundreds of subtances in food that have healing and disease prevention properties.

So why, if there are foods that will heal many of our common aliments, have we not heard more than them? Maybe it is because, just as we have become a fast food society, we have also become a fast cure society. We are looking for the easy way to cure and prevent diseases by just popping a pill.

Just look at the increasing number of commericals on TV and the ads in magazines for drugs. Many times the side effects sound worse than the disease they are meant to prevent or cure!

Wouldn’t it be better to use nature own remedies, remedies with no side effects, to cure and prevent diseases? Of course it would! That is why I decided to write Healing Foods – Important Information You Need For A Healhier Life.

In Healing Foods – Important Information You Need For A Healhier Life, you will discover how to use common foods to prevent many of the diseases that our society suffers from.

You will learn about:

Do YOU Have Syndrome X?

Posted by team1accord on January 3, 2009

Syndrome X [also known as Metabolic syndrome, Insulin Resistance Syndrome] is a combination of medical conditions that increases the risk of diabetes, stroke, and  heart disease.
It is a very common and dangerous medical problem.

Syndrome X is defined as having 3 or more of the following health conditions:

1) excess weight around the waist (waist measurement of more than 40 inches for men and more than 35 inches for    women)
2) triglycerides blood level of 150 mg/dL or more
3) HDL cholesterol levels below 40 mg/dL for men and below 50 mg/dL for women
4) blood pressure of 130/85 mm HG or higher
5) prediabetes (a fasting blood sugar between 100 and 125) or diabetes (a fasting blood sugar level over 125 mg/dL).

You may be asking yourself how does this come about?
Being overweight, poor diet, a lack of exercise, and other unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, appear to be factors that contribute to Syndrome X.
It tends to run in families, so the genes you inherit also play a role.

Usually there are no symptoms to Syndrome X .

Syndrome X is diagnosed by your health care provider who will examine  and perform lab tests on you.
These tests will measure the levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and sugar in your blood.

Treatment for Syndrome X
The most important part of treatment is lifestyle change: exercise to improve fitness and lose weight.
Eating a healthier diet is part of this change. You may want to give consideration using the Mediterranean Diet in your meal plan modification.
Your health care provider may prescribe medicines to treat other risk factors.
These medicines may include aspirin, blood pressure medicines, and cholesterol drugs.
Aspirin may help prevent blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks.
Blood pressure medicines can reduce your blood pressure.
And cholesterol drugs can bring down high triglyceride levels and raise your HDL, or “good” cholesterol, levels.

If metabolic syndrome is not treated, you are much more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or diabetes.
Increasing your physical activity and losing weight can help prevent development of diabetes.
Blood glucose levels may return to normal. These improvements in lifestyle, including a healthier diet plus medicines if needed, can also improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels, thus reducing your risk for heart disease.
Making lifestyle changes and taking medicines as prescribed can add years to your life.

What can I do to take care of myself?
Get regular aerobic exercise (like walking at a good pace) according to your health care provider’s recommendations. Increasing your physical activity can help improve every one of the risk factors for Syndrome X.
Substitute some of the animal fats, sugars, and white flour products in your diet with more olive and canola oil, nuts, avocados and fish (especially salmon, mackerel and tuna), fruits, vegetables and whole-grain breads and cereals.
If you are overweight, lose weight.
Take all medicines according to your provider’s instructions.
If you are a smoker, quit.

Diabetes On The Rise

Posted by team1accord on December 24, 2008

A rapidly growing and alarming trend of  Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, is brewing in the united states

with obesity levels at an all time high. Predictions indicate this trend will only get worse.

The diagnosis of diabetes has skyrocketed from 5.5 to 6.5 percent between 2001 and 2002.

WOW! That’s a dramatic increase happening in just one year!

Generally, twelve million Americans have been diagnosed and another 5 million Americans are unaware they have diabetes.

More chilling is another 12 million are in danger of developing type 2 diabetes because of impaired glucose levels.

Not knowing is the worst because risks of untreated diabetes puts us at a serious risk of complications

including but not limited to blindness, disability, amputations and ultimately death.

The paradox is, that type 2 diabetes is almost completely preventable. Physician’s say eat less, eat better and exercise. The numbers show just how many Americans are currently overweight.

Another paradox is it’s generally more expensive to eat healthy and cheaper to eat unhealthy.

However, with proper nutritional education from health care professionals including Dieticians healthy eating can be affordable if not cheaper.

Statistics point to people living longer and it has been on the rise for years. But this will not continue to progress if type 2 diabetes is not put under control.

We are a greedy society and ultimately it is affecting how we live and how long we live.

And unfortunately, the diabetes epidemic is not just confined to the US. It is spreading worldwide with epidemic reports in the Middle East, Asia, and the Caribbean.

It is estimated that by 2025, the number of diabetics worldwide will rise to 380 million. Diabetes is nowaffecting more young and middle-aged population in developing countries between the ages of 40 and 59.

There is a great book  on achieving normal blood sugars by Dr. Richard Bernstein, I highly recommend it!

Holiday Reflections

Posted by team1accord on December 21, 2008

Am sitting in my office thinking about how fast this year has flown by.I guess the old saying is true, the older you get the faster the years seem to fly by.
This year has been an interesting one indeed, history was made in many ways but the most important ones that stand out in my mind were:

1) African American Democratic Candidate won the Democratic nomination and was elected president and will be sworn in next month. WOW! I did not think I would live to see it happen, so far I am still in the land of living and President-Elect Barack Obama will become our next president.
2) The financial crumbling of the banking, financial & automotive industries and how it trickles down affecting small business owners & the employment throughtout the country.
3)Foreclosures – Many people have lost and/or in danger of losing their homes.

As we are in the midst of the holidays, I think lots of people are focusing more on some of the traditional holiday values which are:

1) being around loved ones and people that care about you
2)being more selective regarding holiday spending
3)the simple joys of being together with friends & family, playing cards, eating great food, drinking spirits, watching the football game, hanging out in the kitchen catching up on the family gossip
In the midst of a challenging economy, I am grateful to have a job, roof over my head, gas in my car & food in the cubbards.
As  an healthcare professional hospitals dont close, I will be working xmas eve & xmas but will be calling my friends & loved ones to wish them happy holidays.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS  & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!
